Jim Wood: Thanks for sharing Andy's blog with us. I soaked in every word as I read it. Andy, I grew up much in same way as your father. We followed the same pattern for acquiring some very good food porcessed the same manner. I now live in LaGrange, Ga. after spending almost of my earlier years including childhood and teen-age only to return to the old home place west of Millry in the early 70's. You said it so well that we all must return to our roots occasionaly. I do that as well. As you know, I was in the neighborhood during your recent visit. We have maintained our home in Washington County so that Catherine and I can return to our roots occasionally even though the house is expensive and difficult to keep up, it seems to be worth the price. As an added bonus, we always get to spend a great deal of time with your parents and other friends on each visit.
Your blog certainly brought back a lot of mennories. Our thanks. We knew and had a close relationship with your grandparents, Mr. Sam and Mrs. Lenora.

Andy, you just can't know how much it meant to me for you to be here this past week and my having the opportunity to refresh not only your memories of the old place, but of mine. Many times I spend time out in the old smokehouse shop, the barn, tractor shed and all over the farm just remembering my heritage in growing up here.

I'm truly grateful that you can feel such a strong part of this place, as well as all your family does. It means a lot to your mother and I that all of our family feel so at home here.

Thanks once again for all the help, especially since I've been under the weather for the past few weeks.

Love Ya,

Daddy

Hey Matt,

One of the soul roots places I didn't mention above is the East Tennessee mountains, where we went on many a vacation when I was growing up, and near where my parents lived (Oak Ridge) off and on for 12-plus years. I come alive when I'm in that area. And you're right - it just gets in your blood.

Ok, first of all: I'm hungry now! That's my kinda cookin' there! That was back before we had to worry about cholesterol and hardened arteries! Bring on the "red-eye" gravy!

Andy, great story in this one. My grandparents have all gone home, and their earthly homes are now occupied by others. For me, my "roots" are in the mountains where there homes were. I told my wife that the mountains are just in my blood. It's where I go to remember where I've come from. There's a feeling I get there that just makes me say "home."

That's the smokehouse for me. Enjoy your time at home!
