My Favorite Funny Posts in 2008

by Andy Wood on December 23, 2008

Life is too serious not to be laughed at.  And 2008 has given us plenty of seriously funny expressions that soften our defenses, then make a point.  Often a sharp one!

So without further ado, here, in reverse order are my 10 personal favorite funny blog posts from 2008.  Many have links elsewhere, or combine videos with photos, etc.  But you’re seeing them where I found them (or put them).

10.  Speculators
David Hayward describes himself as “an artist trapped inside a pastor’s body.”  His cartoons have appeared several times here.  They often combine a funny thought with a sharp, convicting point.  In “Speculators,” he pokes at the way people can and do profit from the message of the cross.  Want more? Here’s one that mocks corporate mentality in the church.

9.  Bobo Brown and the Art of Politics
This is an election-time send-up that includes an animation from Walt Handelsman and Jib-Jab’s incredible “Time for Some Campaigning” video. (Want more politics?  Check out this post on Obama’s election.

8.  Move Over Frosty
Walt Hendelsman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for Newsday.  As I mentioned earlier, he occasionally produces an animation, and nearly all are hilarious.  His latest made the list because it spoofs “Frosty the Snowman” and takes a poke at all the government handouts we’re watching.  My favorite of all time actually came out last year.  He spoofs “Born to be Wild” to show how far Baby Boomers have come.

7.  TurboTithe:  Not a Penny More than You Have To
Tom-in-the-Box is a Christian satire site.  Nothing is too sacred for them to go after… including (gasp!) tithing!  Right around tax time this year, they introduced us to a new “product” that could change everything!  If you’ve ever wondered how to calculate your tithe down to the last penny (or mint or cumin), then TurboTithe is for you!

6.  Top Five Challenges of the Newly-Married
John Shore is an author and humorist who “can make people laugh and think at the same time.”  Here he takes a funny look at the challenges of newly-married “bliss.”  Want more?  One day John discovered that what was once cheap and unkempt is now “green.”

5.  Christianese
Carissa found this video from the folks at BADD.  As she says, if you’re a Christian, you’ll get this.  If you haven’t been around churchspeak for a while, you may want to order the tapes.

4.  HOA
This is for anybody who has ever been a part of, or had to deal with, a Homeowners’ Association.  Todd Thompson takes a hysterical look at a group of people who “are still bitter about not being elected president of the Sophomore class.”

3.  Men Men Men Men, Manly Men Men Men
I put this together for the debut post on our SynerJACK site.  When serious becomes funny and funny becomes serious, we must be talking about manhood!

2.  My Favorite Funny Commercials of All Time
I waited 12 years to find an online version of the funniest commercial (radio) I had ever heard in my life.  It was the only time I’ve ever thought of calling a radio station and actually requesting a commercial.  I found out this year, I was not alone.

1.  Should the Government Stop Dumping Money Into a Giant Hole?
Okay, quick disclaimer.  This is not a blog post, but I came across several that linked to it.  It is an amazingly well-done video by the folks at The Onion (sorry about the bad word in the introduction).  And it is the absolute funniest thing I have seen all year.

How about you?  Leave a comment about your nominations for the funniest posts YOU’VE encountered this year.  Make sure to leave a url where we can find it and laugh along!
