Hello, Fascinating text. Thank you. On the other hand, I would like to know who is the artist who did the drawing of the angels "Knights of Heaven" showed on this page (it seems familiar to me). Thank you for your reply.

PB,

You're right, it doesn't. That Mary and Joseph likely stayed with family (not sure about friends) is based on what we know about Middle Eastern hospitality in those days. To have a guest of any type was considered a great honor, and a disgrace if one couldn't take care of them. The fact that David's descendents - all of them, including Joseph - were returning to Bethlehem made it quite possible that Joseph and Mary were staying with distant cousins. But this is, as you point out, a speculative argument from silence. One thing is pretty certain, from what we know - There were no Mariott or Hilton hotels back then. The "inn" almost certainly was someone's home - much like Bed and Breakfasts today.

History also tells us that caves were very common abodes for animals; they were "God made," and plentiful in the area. Again, however, this is not specifically mentioned in scripture, although the Church of the Nativity is actually built over one (for what that is worth).

Just curious as to your source for your "Setting the Scene" speculation. Not sure the bible ever talks about Mary and Joseph staying with friends, or that their accommodation was a cave, or that Jesus was born during the day. It certainly seems that the bible is inconclusive on this, but to me that means you can't tell one way or the other. I'm wondering if you are using some other source than the birth accounts in Matt & Luke??

Hi there - I pastor a small congregation in Southern California and have been studying and praying over my messages this Christmas season. This word, which you've entitled, "Hark! the Angels Didn't Sing," is really a blessing and challenge to me. I just wanted to say thanks for freely sharing your wonderful insights with the Body of Christ.
