ball-game.JPGRandy is the president of a major water pump business located in Fort Worth, Texas.  A few months ago he was on a Southwest Airlines flight and struck up a conversation with the lady sitting next to him.  She was on her way home from a DFW visit to her daughter.  A wedding shower trip, she said.  As the conversation progressed, the lady somehow got to talking about her daughters and their love for the Atlanta Braves.  For their sixteenth birthday, the one thing the twins wanted was to fly to Atlanta for a game.  Then when the Braves were coming to Arlington a couple of years ago, it happened to be just before one of the girls’ wedding, so that didn’t work out.

And wouldn’t you know it?  Here they were, an hour flight away, and again, they were here during the week of a the second twin’s wedding and the only dates they could go were taken up with wedding stuff.

Well, let’s just see, says Randy, as he pulls out a Baseball magazine and flips to the Rangers’ schedule.  Actually, there was a way, and there was a day.  Oh, and I have six season tickets to the Rangers Ballpark at Arlington, says he.  He offered them as a wedding present.

DownloadThe lady, of course, was my wife.  And Wednesday night, courtesy of a man we had never met before, we got to see the Braves play for the first time in five years.  It’s one of the most fun MLB experiences we’ve ever had.  Amazing seats.  And one pretty cool feat.  Third batter up, Chipper Jones went yard straight over the center field fence.  From the noise of the crowd, safe to say, we weren’t the only Braves fans there.

What made the night extra special, however, were the extra things – the little things that went beyond a generous wedding gift to a family.  When we got there and got settled in, Randy’s son, also named Randy, came to meet us (he had the other two tickets).  He gave us a hand-written note and business card from his dad:

Robin and family,

Sorry I could not be at the game tonight!  I am going to San Francisco in the morning – my son, Randy, is using the other 2 tickets.

I hope you enjoy the game – and the Rangers win!

After the game was over, Randy (the son) came back and offered us his souvenir program from the game.  I think that acorn didn’t fall very far from the tree.

Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”  Sometimes I wonder if the angels aren’t the ones doing the entertaining.

Thanks, Randy, for an amazing gesture of kindness.

  1. I guess the Rangers did y’all a favor. They won on Tuesday and Thursday against the Braves but let “Hotlanta” win on Wednesday. Just for you? I am saying, yes.

While I am not going to argue with the Bible, I do not think that family members can truly be strangers. After all, Aren’t we(humans) all related? Just a thought.

Being raised in West Texas I learned at a very young age to wave at people when driving and stop and help people that need it for one day it might e you in need and would want someone to help you. There is some sorta rule in there. Maybe someone should write it down. That is a good little nugget of advice.
