“What road are we on?” Frank asked.
“1585,” I replied.
“Wrong!” he said triumphantly. Look at the sign.”
“Whoa! When did they do that?”
“That” is a subtle shift from “State F.M. Road 1585″ to “130th Street, Lubbock, Texas.” Didn’t appear to be anything more than a new street sign. But for those who roam through fields of dreams, little changes today can mean enormous ripples or quakes in the future.
On this particular night we were roaming through some of Frank’s dreams as a businessman. We passed houses yet to be built, businesses yet to earn a dollar, schools yet to register a single student, parks yet to see a goal or home plate. But to my host, what is to others a cotton field is already a community. The rest is just time and details.
I could relate as we passed Turning Point – our field of dreams. We’re still planting pipes and trees, but I could already see – well, stuff we’ll talk about later.
Fields of dreams can happen anywhere. That three-year-old’s hand you hold? That’s a field of dreams. That university class you sit in? Ditto. Same goes for your home, your career, your extended family, or that ministry need. And, of course, your ultimate field of dreams – your relationship with Jesus Christ.
Dreamers get a bad rap sometimes. That’s because dreams are cheap; anybody can have them, and some people only dream. But what I experienced last night was a tour through a workshop of the mind… and of the heart. It was magnificent. My host was building something, and let me have a peek.
Your life today is the harvest of what you and others have sown in the past. What are you building for tomorrow? Not wishing for – but dreaming and praying and acting into existence? Take a tour through your field of dreams. And before God, start believing and acting. Remember those electrifying and haunting words of Jesus? “According to your faith….”
